Your Winter Whale Watching & Coastal Hike Itinerary Near Monterey

January 05, 2026
Category: Aura Inn Monterey

Think Monterey is just for summer beach days? Think again.

January and February are actually a "secret season" on the Central Coast. While the rest of the country is shoveling snow, Monterey is witnessing one of the most majestic wildlife migrations on Earth: the Gray Whale migration.

If you’re a wildlife enthusiast or a family looking for an epic winter escape that doesn't involve a ski lift, this itinerary is for you. We’ve been helping travelers navigate the Monterey Peninsula for over a decade, and winter is hands-down our favorite time for adventure.

Buckle up (and grab a jacket)—here is your ultimate winter guide to whales and wilderness.

Morning: The Peak of Whale Watching Season

Did you know January is the peak migration month for Gray Whales? Over 20,000 of these gentle giants swim through Monterey Bay on their way from Alaska to the warm lagoons of Mexico.

Because the Monterey Submarine Canyon is so deep and so close to shore, you don't have to travel far to see them.

What to Expect on the Water:

  • The Sightings: Gray Whales are the stars, but keep your eyes peeled for humpbacks, orcas (killer whales), and massive pods of Risso’s dolphins.
  • Expert Insight: Most tours operate out of Old Fisherman’s Wharf, just minutes from Aura Inn. Marine biologists on board will help you spot "blows," breaches, and tail flukes.
  • Pro Tip: The ocean air is significantly colder than the land. Wear layers. Even if it’s 60°F at the dock, it can feel like 40°F on the water!

Problem solved: Worried about sea sickness? Check the morning forecasts. Early trips (9:00 AM) often have the calmest waters before the afternoon winds pick up.

Afternoon: Coastal Hikes with a View

After you’ve found your sea legs, it’s time to hit the trails. Winter in Monterey brings crisp, clear air that makes for high-visibility "Diamond Days"—perfect for spotting whales from the shore.

1. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve (The Crown Jewel)

Just a 15-minute drive from Aura Inn, Point Lobos is non-negotiable.

  • The Trail: Take the Cypress Grove Trail (.8 miles).
  • Why Winter? It offers some of the best elevated vantage points to see whales migrating south without ever leaving land. Plus, the crashing winter surf against the granite cliffs is spectacular.

2. Soberanes Point & Whale Peak (Garrapata State Park)

If you want to escape the crowds, head slightly further south to Garrapata.

  • The Trail: The Soberanes Point Loop (2 miles).
  • The Highlight: As the name suggests, Whale Peak is a prime spot for land-based whale watching. The 360-degree views of the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific are unbeatable.

3. Asilomar Coast Trail (Easy & Accessible)

For a more relaxed stroll, try the Asilomar Coast Trail in Pacific Grove.

  • The Vibe: It’s a mile-long boardwalk that hugs the rocky shoreline. It’s pet-friendly and perfect for families with strollers.

Your Basecamp for Winter Adventure

After a day of salt air and trail dust, you need a place to defrost and recharge.

At Aura Inn Monterey, we specialize in being the perfect home base for active travelers. We’re located right on Munras Avenue, giving you a straight shot to Highway 1 for your morning hikes and quick access to the Wharf for your boat tours.

  • Warm Up: Head back and dive into our heated swimming pool or grab a hot coffee in your room (every room includes a coffee maker!).
  • Refuel: Our Suites with Full Kitchens are a lifesaver for families who want to whip up a warm meal after a day in the elements.
  • Practicality: Wet gear? No problem. Use our on-site guest laundry to get your hiking clothes ready for day two.

Ready to catch the migration?

The whales won't wait, and neither should you. Winter dates fill up fast as travelers head to the coast for the "secret season."
