GPS Not Needed: How to Navigate Highway 1 and Get to Aura Inn Stress-Free

May 05, 2026
Category: Aura Inn Monterey

We’ve all been there. You’re driving down the iconic California Highway 1, the Pacific Ocean is sparkling to your right, and suddenly—your GPS signal drops. Or worse, it tells you to take a "shortcut" that leads you into a labyrinth of residential side streets.

Navigating a coastal town shouldn't feel like a chore. As a local who has driven the Monterey Peninsula for over a decade, I’m going to let you in on a secret: getting to Aura Inn Monterey is incredibly simple once you know the landmarks.

Put the phone in the cup holder and enjoy the view. Here is your stress-free guide to arriving at our doorstep.

1. The Highway 1 Approach (Coming from the North)

Most of our guests arrive from the San Francisco or San Jose area. You’ll be cruising south on Highway 1, passing through the scenic artichoke fields of Castroville.

  • The Landmark: Keep an eye out for the Monterey Peninsula College signs.
  • The Turn: You’re looking for Exit 399B for Munras Avenue. This is the "Golden Exit" for our guests.
  • The Final Stretch: Once you exit, stay in the right lane. You’ll merge directly onto Munras Avenue. We are located at 1300 Munras Ave, just a few blocks down on your left.

2. The Scenic Route (Coming from the South/Big Sur)

If you’re coming up from Big Sur, you’re already treated to the best views in the world. But as you enter Carmel-by-the-Sea, the roads can get curvy and confusing.

  • The Trick: Stay on Highway 1 North until you see the exit for Munras Avenue.
  • The Landmark: You’ll pass the Del Monte Center (a large outdoor shopping mall) on your left. Once you pass that, you are less than two minutes away from your room.

3. Why Our Location is a "Navigator’s Dream"

One of the biggest pain points for Monterey travelers is the "Cannery Row Traffic Trap." Many hotels are tucked away in high-congestion zones where one-way streets make navigation a nightmare.

At Aura Inn Monterey, we are strategically positioned on Munras Avenue. Why does this matter?

  • Wide Roads: No tight alleys or confusing one-way grids to fight through.
  • Easy Access: We are located on a main artery that connects the highway directly to the historic downtown.
  • Stress-Free Parking: Unlike downtown hotels where you have to hunt for a parking garage, we offer convenient on-site parking right outside your door.

Pro-Tips for a Smooth Drive

  • Avoid the "Fish-Hook": When Highway 1 merges with Highway 156 near Castroville, traffic can bottle up. If you're traveling on a Friday afternoon, give yourself an extra 30 minutes.
  • Watch the Fog: The Monterey "Marine Layer" can roll in quickly. If visibility drops, stick to the right lane—the exits are well-marked with reflective signs.
  • Fuel Up Early: If you're coming from the south, fuel up in Big Sur or Carmel; gas prices tend to jump the closer you get to the tourist hubs.

Arrive, Unpack, and Relax

The goal of your trip is to see the Monterey Bay Aquarium or enjoy a sunset at Fisherman’s Wharf, not to white-knuckle your steering wheel while staring at a blue dot on a screen.

When you stay at Aura Inn, you get the best of both worlds: the peace of a well-located hotel and the ease of a simple commute.
